"Handala was born ten years old, and he will always be ten years old. At that age, I left my homeland.  I presented him to the poor and named him Handala as a symbol of bitterness. At first, he was a Palistinian child, but his consciousness developed to have a national and then a global and human horizon"

Naji Al-Ali

(1936-1987)

Al-Ali was a Palestinian cartoonist, with no political links who criticised events of the Palestine-Israel conflict through his cartoons.  All the cartoons contain a small boy, Handala, a symbolic character silently watching the scene.

Naji Al-Ali was assasinated in 1987.
