Steve Cox

Santa Cruz Massacre I, 1991

Cox began his career in advertising but following a trip to the Middle East, he realised that he wanted to show the injustices sufferd by people there. His photos of Saddam Hussein's attacks on the Kurdish people were published in the newspapers.

In 1991 he went to East Timor, where Amnesty International reported that a third of the population had perished under the Indonesian occupation.  While there he witnessed the massacre of unarmed students in a graveyard in Santa Cruz, during the funeral of a fellow student.  He narrowly escaped with his life.

'I don't believe we have the right to be shielded from the hell that other people are suffering.'
