Whether or not you
give homework will be determined by school policy. However, homework
should be differentiated according to individual needs.
Points to consider:
If you tell all students to 'Have a
go', even if it is beyond their capabilities some of the less able
but conscientious students may refuse to stop until they have finished
or become exhausted and frustrated.
Don't encourage or expect parents to
adapt the homework to suit the pupil. A conscientious pupil will
hate the idea and be embarassed.
Be aware that not all pupils can avail
of homework clubs due to bus times etc.
Don't expect students to use their lunchtimes
to go to support clubs. A break is very necessary for them. There
can be social stigma also from their peers.
Although encouraging word processing
for homework, be aware that this could introduce more distractions
in the way of Internet and games.
Don't openly make the student aware
that he or she should spend less time on homework than other pupils;
this can be done discreetly at a parent-teacher meeting.
Encourage parents to communicate homework
difficulties directly to you via school secretary etc. and not through
notes carried by pupil who may not deliver them through embarassment.
Keep a note of all correspondence between
yourself and parents and key points discussed.
