SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS IN The POST-PRIMARY SCHOOL Classroom Management As in primary/national school some pupils within your class are likely to be on the SEN register, and can be at any stage of the Code of Practice. If you have a child with Special Educational Needs in your class it is to be expected that he/she will need more of your time, therefore you need to consider how to provide for other pupils' needs too. Teach pupils to be independent; to know where to get the resources they need. Have a selection of extension activities which they should do if they finish work and you are not immediately available to attend to them. Reduce the amount of time you need to spend on administration issues: at the start of the year produce written instructions which pupils can paste inside the subject folders, e.g. what equipment is expected for each lesson and the consequences/procedure if forgotten, the way in which work should be presented - headings, page numbers etc. If you have pupils who need extra explanations/instructions teach them to wait until the rest of the class have started work, when you will give them undivided attention. It is good practice to tell pupils what the objectives of the lessons are and how their achievements will be judged. They can then be involved in setting their own targets and more responsible for reaching them.
