This project looks to capture and compare the pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) of pre-service science teachers using a tool called the content representation (CoRe) tool. PCK is considered an amalgam of knowledge of content and how to teach that content. It is the knowledge base unique to the province of teaching and is a critical construct in helping pre-service teachers to understand the complexities of teaching.
The reason for comparison between pre-service teachers in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is to understand whether and how their apprenticeship of observation, having experienced different curricula, influences their PCK.
This project also serves as a professional learning experience for the pre-service teachers as they socially construct and capture their PCK. Existing studies in Ireland (Lehane 2016) and internationally (Bertram 2010) shows how this tool can positively influence their professional development by discussing and planning for the complexities of teaching.
