For many children who have social difficulties; particularly those on the autism spectrum, time outside the structure of the classroom can be daunting and intimidating. They may feel the need for a secure place where they can hang out without having to explain themselves. In secondary schools many of these children make use of the library for such a purpose but others believe that they should be encouraged not to do this in the belief that it makes them socialise with others. You might consider using the SEN classroom as a 'place of safety' and have it staffed by a classroom assistant. If eating together with others is a problem then perhaps they could have their lunch there. Consider also the need for them after school when other class members attend homework clubs. There may be a need for provision for these children after school too.
