Andrew

Andrew is eleven.  He has been diagnosed as having ADHD under control with Ritalin.  He also is on the Autism Spectrum.  he doesn’t communicate very well and appears quite happy to sit for long periods of time doing very little.  If asked to do some written work he will inevitably bring out a dictionary which he will look at for extensive periods until asked to put it away.  He might then write two words before repeating the same procedure again. He will often spend a long time searching in his schoolbag for a pencil or other objects which he may not even need.

He does not relate well to other children but he often appears to hang about on the periphery of their activities.  In group activities his contributions are often not appropriate and he seems to cause annoyance to the group.  He is a very good reader and enjoys one to one reading with the teacher.

His co-ordination is poor and he finds getting changed for P.E. difficult.  He cannot tie his shoe laces nor his school tie.  He is often seen with his shirt hanging out and looking generally dishevelled.

Andrew seems to be drawn to another child who also has ADHD although Robert doesn’t normally present any problems other than being a bit hyperactive before he takes his Ritalin tablet.  They are regularly either best friends or complete enemies.  On one notable occasion both boys were brought into the teacher by a dinner lady.  Andrew had had Robert round the throat and was apparently choking him.  This was a serious incident and Andrew was called in with his parents to the head teacher.  During discussion it was discovered that Andrew had been attended karate classes with his brother and was enjoying them greatly.  Andrew then explained that he was only playing with Robert in the playground.  He was unable to distinguish between the two settings.
