OUTREACH SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN WITH BEHAVIOURAL PROBLEMS (NI)

This service provides part-time placement to help primary children adjust their behaviour to fit in with the norms in their own class. Children are referred at Stage 2 after the classroom teacher has expressed concern to the SENCO and the child referred to the psychology service.

Usually one of the teachers from the support team will ask the classroom teacher to fill in a checklist of possible disruptive behaviours and this will be followed up by an observational visit where the child will be observed. After this the child may be placed on the waiting list for support in the outreach centre. Whether or not he/she is placed on the waiting list, the outreach teacher and the class teacher will work out a behaviour modification plan for the child. A daily diary is used as a record of behaviour and this is seen and signed by parents, class teacher and outreach support.

Parents must agree to allow their child to attend an Outreach Centre. If a child attends the outreach centre, his/her education plan and the curriculum plans of his/her teacher should be provided so that the centre can follow the normal curriculum as far as possible.

Children can only attend the Outreach Centre for a maximum of four terms. During this time they will follow a positive behaviour modification program which will aim towards gradual reintegration into their own class full-time.
