Suspension and Expulsion in Republic of Ireland

Boards of Management are expected to have in place a ‘Code of Behaviour’ which all parents have been given and are expected to agree to when enrolling their child in a recognised school. It will also state what measures may be taken when a pupil fails or refuses to observe those standards. It will explain the procedures to be followed before a pupil may be suspended or expelled and the grounds for removing an imposed suspension.

Where a school decides that a pupil should be expelled they must inform the educational welfare officer as to the reasons. The EWO will, as soon as possible, consult with the principal, the parents and the pupil. Pupils cannot be expelled until 20 days after the notification has been made to the EWO.
