This directory is focused on citizenship teacher education. Education for citizenship is a pressing issue for policy makers and practitioners not only in the United Kingdom, but across Europe and, increasingly, much of the world. Many countries across Europe, including England, have introduced citizenship into the school curriculum as part of major, ongoing educational reforms over the past decade. Present thinking suggests that though teachers of Local and Global Citizenship require a specific knowledge base it is important that its practitioners have a commitment to its values and to the employment of active learning approaches in the curriculum.
Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Primary and Post-Primary) PGCE Primary
This programme aims to help you acquire competence in the basic skills of teaching and classroom management within the primary school. In order to ensure a close link between theory and practice, the programme includes both University and school-based work throughout the year. The programme lasts 38 weeks in total, of which 19 will be spent in schools.
Students are introduced to the requirements of the NI Curriculum for Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage2, and for all curriculum subjects with particular emphasis on numeracy and literacy. The programme will also include a qualification in the teaching of Religious Education in the primary school.
PGCE Post Primary
This course prepares students to teach the full range of pupils in secondary and grammar schools. The main subjects at Coleraine are Art and Design, English with Drama and Media Studies, Geography, History, Home Economics and Music. At Jordanstown, Physical Education and Technology and Design are available.
Religious Education can be taken as a subsidiary subject for students with a suitable academic background in Religious Studies, (normally GCSE grade C or equivalent).

Higher Diploma in Education
The Higher Diploma in Education is a full-time course and is the teacher education programme followed by the great majority of those seeking a career in post-primary teaching. It is recognised by the Teachers’ Registration Council (soon to be replaced by the Teaching Council). It is also recognised under the EU directives on mutual recognition of professional qualifications. It has been carefully devised to equip participants with the understanding, experiences and skills required to make a satisfactory career in teaching. Course numbers are limited to allow for sustained, individual attention and guidance in fostering the professional qualities required in modern teaching.
